Small groups at westminster

The primary means for adults to connect and grow in faith at Westminster is through Small Groups.  A Small Group is an intentional gathering of usually 8-12 adults to grow in friendship, apply to Bible to life, care for one another, and serve others. Small Groups usually meet weekly or bi-weekly, either at Westminster or in private homes.  We are constantly adding and chaning groups.  Groups typically last 6-10 weeks, and there are four main studies per year, with multiple-week breaks in-between (so you can give a group a short-term test drive).  There's room in a group for you!  Or you may want to start a group! The next round of Small Groups begins at Easter 2017.  E-mail Greg Swenson for more information.

  • WHEN AND WHERE?

Groups meet on various days and times throughout the week in Rapid City.

  • HOW LONG DO GROUPS LAST?

Our small groups function on a quarterly system.  Each group lasts between 8-10 weeks followed by a 4 week break. You do not have to wait for the start dates, as all of our groups are open to visitors and inviting friends. The groups are flexible.  Each group will have a different feel and make-up.  At the end of each quarter you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group, or even taking a break.

  • WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?

Joining a group requires commitment to regularly attend weekly meetings.  This commitment is the key to a strong group.  Feel free to take the first three weeks to attend a group and make sure it is a good fit for you.  It is expected that things in life come up.  We understand that you will miss a group from time to time. Please don't let that be the reason you don't join.

  • WHAT IS THE COST?

Groups are free. There may be a nominal cost at times for a book if the group decides to study something other than the Sunday sermon for a time. We have a "whatever you can afford" policy.  This means that you will never be turned away from a small group because you cannot afford the study materials.  We would like to work with you to make sure you get the materials you need.  If you need assistance, please let your group leader know or contact the church at 605-343-2164 so that you can only pay what you can afford.

  • WHAT ABOUT MY CHILDREN?

We believe that your walk with God will impact your children in a significant way.  And we want to provide you with every opportunity to experience God in this setting.  That is why we are willing to help pay for your childcare while you go to a small group.  The answer to who and where are freely decided by you- the parent.  Many groups opt to have a sitter at the place they meet, others drop their children off with family, and still others invite a sitter to their own home while they are away at a group. The choice is yours and we'll help.  Just fill out a childcare reimbursement form if you would like to be reimbursed and mail it to the office or drop it in the offering on Sunday morning.

  • HOW DO I CHOOSE A GROUP?

When selecting a group, we strongly recommend you choose a group based on its leader, host, or other members you feel a connection to rather than location or time.

  • HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A GROUP?

This is the easiest part! First, let us know you're interested by emailing Pam Ivins or fill out your connection card found in the bulletin on Sunday morning.  We will follow up with you.

  • CAN I LEAD A GROUP?

Leading a group requires membership, an interview, sharing your personal testimony with us, and some training.  We prefer our leaders to have been attending Westminster for at least 6 months and have been an active part in our small group environment.

  • ARE THERE GROUPS FOR MY CHILDREN?

I'm glad you asked! YES! Groups are part of our philosophy at Westminster.  On Sunday mornings at Kidventure our children break up into age appropriate small groups and on Wednesday nights our students break into high school and middle school discussion/Bible groups.
